Creativity Born From Traditional Artisanship

Through the Japanese practice of Kogei, traditional artisans work in harmony with nature, using timeless techniques to challenge convention. For this collection, Master Blender Shinji Fukuyo revisits a technique from the House of Suntory’s early days – combining peated malt with aging in Spanish oak.

Those earliest whiskies felt too heavy for the Japanese palate and American oak was used with peated malts instead. Now, drawing on over a century of whisky-making history, Master Blender Shinji Fukuyo masterfully applies this technique to create two truly special liquids.

Tasting Notes

Aging in Spanish oak imparts flavors of dried fruit and chocolate as well as a long finish, complemented by the peated malt. From this base, the taste of each whisky varies significantly due to the unique natural environments surrounding each distillery.

Yamazaki Peated Malt Spanish Oak

The warm climate of Yamazaki creates tropical fruit notes, while the use of peated malt imparts a pleasing smokiness – accentuating the unique and colorful spice notes from the Spanish oak casks.

  • Nose: Dark mocha, raisins, almonds.
  • Palate: Deep smokiness, roasted cacao.
  • Finish: A long finish revealing bittersweet caramelized baking spices.

Hakushu Peated Malt Spanish Oak

The Hakushu distillery’s mountain forest surroundings imbue this liquid with citrussy and herbal aromas, complemented with a drier smoke character from the peated malt and undertones of fruity sweetness.

  • Nose: Floral notes, bitter orange marmalade, smoky dark chocolate.
  • Palate: Elegant smokiness, sweet, subtle citrus.
  • Finish: A lingering yet clean finish with gentle smoke and tartness.
