When Excellence Becomes Art: The Path of Monozukuri
The House of Suntory was built on a singular dream — in 1923, Shinjiro Torii envisioned a whisky inspired by the essence of Japan and crafted for the Japanese palate. To bring that vision to life, he founded his distillery in the Yamazaki area for its pristine water, unique climate, and beautiful seasons — elements that would shape the distinctive character of Suntory whiskies. Guided by the riches of Japanese nature and Monozukuri, Shinjiro fulfilled this dream and passed on the resolve — and the quiet joy — of always striving to move one step beyond: to dream boldly, embrace challenges, and improve every day.
Monozukuri is the soul of Japanese whisky, with meticulous attention to detail and a steadfast commitment to quality. It is present in every process in the creation of Suntory’s spirits: in the careful selection of ingredients; in traditional techniques for creating beverages such as sake, reinvented and adapted until they become techniques uniquely our own; in the way whiskies are blended until a perfect balance is achieved; and in the thoughtful selection of the casks in which the spirits will mature.
That philosophy was recognized widely starting in 2003 when Yamazaki 12 was awarded a gold medal at the International Spirits Challenge — a historic first for Japanese whisky. This was the first Japanese Whisky to receive such recognition from an international competition. Suntory’s win changed not only the history of Japanese whisky but the history of whisky itself.
The Yamazaki: Suntory’s Flagship Single Malt Whisky
The Yamazaki has proven to be an exceptional whisky over the years: an icon that has paved the way for its House of Suntory siblings and helped Japanese whiskies become among the most recognised and popular in the world.
It made history in 2003, when it became the first Japanese whisky to win a gold medal at the ISC.
It continued to stand out when, in 2011, Yamazaki 1984 became the first Japanese whisky to win the “World’s Best Single Malt” at the WWA… and it won again in 2012 with Yamazaki 25.
Yamazaki Sherry Cask 2013 was the first Japanese whisky to be named “World Whisky of the Year” in Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible 2015.
The Yamazaki has also been crowned “Supreme Champion Spirit” at the ISC for three consecutive years, from 2023 to 2025, with Yamazaki 25, Yamazaki 12, and Yamazaki 18.
Hibiki: Most Harmonious Japanese Blended Whisky
Created to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the House of Suntory, Hibiki has become one of the most recognised Japanese whiskies — and one of the most beloved by audiences worldwide.
It is also one of the most awarded, as Hibiki 30 and Hibiki 21 have been honoured with the “World’s Best Blended Whisky” by the WWA on more than seven occasions between 2007 and 2019.
In addition, Hibiki 21 was awarded “Supreme Champion Spirit” at the 2017 ISC, and Hibiki 30 has won the ISC Trophy in 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2023.
The Hakushu: The Dream of a New Type of Whisky
The Hakushu is one of the freshest and most recognised exponents of Japanese peated whisky — a unique expression of Japanese nature that captured the title of “World’s Best Single Malt” at the WWA in 2018 and 2020, and won the ISC Trophy in the Japanese Whisky category in 2022.
Toki and Kakubin: Also Recognised in Leading Spirits Awards
Monozukuri philosophy also guides Toki and Kakubin. Toki — clean and versatile — elevates the highball; and Kakubin — the Japanese icon — keeps its timeless balance year after year. Kakubin and Toki won their first gold at the ISC in 2024. Their awards reinforce Suntory’s vision: Japanese craftsmanship and innovation in the service of harmony.
Roku Gin — Awards & Recognition
Born at the meeting point of Japan’s four seasons and Monozukuri, Roku gin is balance, precision, and attention to the smallest detail. That harmony has been recognised across major spirits awards, including a gold medal at the WGA in 2025 and the trophy for “Best Distilled Gin” at the International Spirits Challenge in 2025.
Haku Vodka — Tradition, Refined
Haku vodka shows how rooted artisan traditions can transform and create something new, singular, and exquisite — guided by the spirit of Yatte Minahare. Crafted from Japanese rice and filtered through bamboo charcoal, Haku offers a smooth, luminous purity that has been praised with the gold medal at the International Spirits Competition in 2024 and a gold (96 pts) at the IWSC in 2025 with its Yuzu Flavoured version. These awards in leading spirits competitions confirm a simple truth: when technique listens to nature, the result speaks for itself.
Producer & Team Awards
The ISC has recognised the House of Suntory with the “Distiller of the Year” award on five occasions: 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2021. In addition, it has been the only winner of the “Producer of the Year” — Japanese Whisky award from the ISC since its creation in 2020, and Shinji Fukuyo, Chief Blender of Suntory, was awarded in 2024 as “Master Blender of the Year”. This international acclaim extends to the home of Suntory’s white spirits, with Suntory Osaka Distillery winning producer of the year at the IWSC Awards in 2025.
These awards and other distinctions in design and brand celebrate coordinated craft: people and nature in harmony, knowledge passed on, and a shared pursuit of balance.
